Researcher Laia Alsina graduated in Medicine in 2000 from the University of Barcelona, and he obtained a specialization in Paediatrics in 2004 at the Hospital San Juan de Dios Barcelona. She obtained her PhD degree from the University of Barcelona, in 2008.
Between 2008 and 2010 he completed a postdoctoral stay at the Baylor Institute for Immunology Research in Dallas, where he studied the immune pathways related to primary immunodeficiencies.
In 2018, she was appointed Head of the Unit of Clinical Immunology and Primary Immunodeficiencies of the SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital and coordinated the Unit of Clinical Immunology between the Clinical Hospital and Sant Joan de Déu.
She is an Associate Professor at the University of Barcelona, since 2018.
She currently co-leads the Study Group of Diseases for Immune Dysfunction in Paediatrics (GEMDIP) where he studies the pathways affected in different forms of primary immunodeficiency, and how to apply this knowledge in personalized therapies in patients with diseases due to immune dysfunction, as well as the impact on the childhood immune system of various immunosuppressive therapies.

Researchers discover a key factor that predicts COVID-19 disease severity
A study led by Drs. Laia Alsina and Iolanda Jordan from the IRSJD evidences a key factor that predicts the severity of COVID-19: an alteration of the first immune response to SARS-CoV-2 infection, in key molecules in the anti-infective response. The study has been published in open access in the journal iScience.
