Introduction:

The Gilead Sciences Research Scholars Programs provide financial support to junior faculty researchers for a two-year period. There are several programmes available for various therapeutic areas (eg pulmonary arterial hypertension, cardiovascular disease, cystic fibrosis, haematology/oncology, HIV, and liver disease) and/or region.

Programmes open to applicants from Europe are:

• Gilead Sciences International Research Scholars Program in Hematology/Oncology: the mission of this programme is to support innovative scientific research that will advance knowledge in the field of haematology/oncology and provide support for research career development. The programme is designed to support innovative translational research projects in haematologic malignancies that can be based around either a clinical trial or laboratory investigation.
• Gilead Sciences International Research Scholars Program in Liver Disease: the mission of this programme is to support innovative scientific research that will advance knowledge in the field of liver disease and provide support for research career development. The programme is designed to support basic and clinical research in the field of liver disease. Areas of research may include (but are not limited to): Chronic viral hepatitis, End-stage liver disease and its complications, Non-viral chronic liver diseases and basic, clinical, and translational research related to liver disease, Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) - Cholangiocarcinoma (CCC).
• Gilead Science Research Scholars Cystic Fibrosis Program: this programme is designed to support basic, translational, and clinical research in the field of cystic fibrosis (CF). Areas of research may include, but are not limited to: CF basic pathophysiology, CF-specific microbiology, and CF-related epidemiology, clinical care, and health-related outcomes.

Budget

Each award is funded up to $130,000, to be paid in annual instalments of up to $65,000 per year for two years. Funding for the second year is contingent upon submission of a progress report and approval by the Scientific Review Committee Chair.

Eligibility

Gilead Sciences International Research Scholars Program in Hematology/Oncology

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Hold an MD, PhD, or equivalent degree at time of award.
• Anticipate receiving a faculty appointment or an assistant professorship within three years, in association with a research institution in one of the eligible regions/countries (Australia, Europe, Hong Kong, Japan, Middle East, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan) at the time of application. Applicants already holding a tenured position or an Associate Professorship are not eligible.
• Have a strong career interest in haematology/oncology, with a focus on haematologic malignancies.
• Have a research mentor with extensive experience in the field of haematology/oncology, with a focus on haematologic malignancies.
• Be able to devote at least 50% of their professional time to research (versus administrative, patient care, or teaching responsibilities).
• Be able to complete the proposed research within the twoyear award period, providing evidence (manuscript, presentation, or abstracts) for future research projects.

The eligible countries/regions for this programme are: Australia, Europe, Hong Kong, Japan, Middle East, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan.

Gilead Sciences International Research Scholars Program in Liver Disease

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Hold an MD, DO, PhD, or equivalent degree at time of award.
• Anticipate receiving a faculty appointment or an assistant professorship within three years, in association with a research institution in one of the eligible countries/regions at the time of application (Australia, Europe, Middle East, New Zealand).
• Have a strong career interest in liver disease.
• Have a research mentor with extensive experience in the field of liver disease.
• Be able to devote at least 50% of their professional time to research (versus administrative, patient care, or teaching responsibilities).
• Be able to complete the proposed research within the twoyear award period, providing evidence (manuscript, presentation, or abstracts) resulting from the research.

The eligible countries/regions for this programme are: Australia, Europe, Middle East and New Zealand.

Gilead Science Research Scholars Cystic Fibrosis Program

European applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Hold a medical degree or PhD at time of award.
• Anticipate receiving a faculty appointment or an assistant professorship within three years, in association with a research institution in one of the eligible regions/countries.
• Have a strong career interest in cystic fibrosis.
• Have a research mentor with extensive experience in the field of cystic fibrosis.
• Be able to devote at least 50% of professional time to research for the next two years (versus administrative, patient care, or teaching responsibilities).
• Be able to complete the proposed research within the twoyear award period, providing evidence (manuscript, presentation, or abstracts) resulting from the research.

The eligible countries/regions for this programme are: Canada, Europe and United States.
