Description:

EMBO (European Molecular Biology Organization) supports internationally mobile postdoctoral researchers in the life sciences, funding postdoc projects in excellent host labs in Europe and beyond.

The fellowship is mainly about giving you the right conditions to do a strong postdoc abroad: 1-2 years (most commonly 2), with salary via a host-institution contract in EMBC countries (or a stipend outside EMBC Member States), plus travel/relocation support and some family-related allowances depending on the hosting country.
Objective: promote international exchange and support excellent postdoctoral training and research driven by a solid biological question (not just descriptive/applied without a clear biology question).

Requirements

(Main points; full details in the guidelines.)

  • PhD (or equivalent) must be held by the start of the fellowship; if you already have the PhD at application time, it must be within 2 years of the submission date (extensions possible for parental leave, illness, mandatory service, etc.; contact EMBO in advance for exceptions).
  • At least one first-author primary research paper accepted/published in a peer-reviewed international journal or an eligible first-author preprint with public in-depth peer reviews (as defined by EMBO).
  • International mobility is mandatory (you must move countries); you cannot apply to go to the country where you obtained your PhD.
  • Not eligible if: direct continuation of PhD project; returning to a lab where you worked >6 months (including during Master's); applying to the PhD lab/department or to work again with the PhD supervisor; already in the host lab ≥6 months at submission.
  • Application must be in English; figures/tables are not allowed in the application form.
  • Application package includes two reference letters (one from PhD supervisor/co-supervisor) + acceptance letter from the receiving institute; all submitted via the EMBO online system.
