Be a citizen of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan. (JSPS treats Taiwanese and Palestinian researchers in this manner.)
Candidates must have obtained their doctoral degree within six years of the date the fellowship goes into effect (on or after 2 April 2011)
Note: Those who have previously been awarded a fellowship under the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship for Research in Japan ([P] and [Pathway to University positions in Japan]) are not eligible. Persons who are Japanese citizen and foreigners who are permitted permanent residence in Japan are not eligible.

Each host institution may have its own application deadline more than one month before the deadline set by JSPS. Applicants (host researchers) should check with the staff of host institution in advance.
Applications under this program must be submitted to JSPS by a host researcher in Japan. Overseas researchers wishing to participate in the program are advised to establish contact with a Japanese or foreign-resident researcher in their field and to ask him/her to submit an application.More information
