Professor Alexis Arzimanoglou is the Coordinator of the European Reference Network for Rare and Complex Epilepsies, ERN EpiCARE. He currently serves as Research Coordinator of the Epilepsy Unit of the SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital and is the Director of the Department of Paediatric Clinical Epileptology, Sleep Disorders and Functional Neurology at the University Hospitals of Lyon (France).
Following his medical qualification in 1981 from the University of Salonica (Greece), he trained in neurology and paediatric neurology in London and Paris. Board certified in Neurology (1989), he first worked as a consultant at the Pitié-Salpêtrière Neurological Hospital (Paris) before being appointed, in 1999, University Hospital Practitioner in Child Neurology and Head of the Epilepsy Program at the University Hospital Robert Debré (Paris); Professor at the Medical College of Paris (2007-CMHP) and Visiting Professor at the Universitat de Barcelona (2016). In 2008, he was invited by the University Hospitals of Lyon, France, to create the Department of Paediatric Epileptology and Neurophysiology. Since 2016 he is also collaborating as Consultant with the SJD Child Neurology Department.
Currently, an elected member of the European Executive Board of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE-Europe). In the past he served as President of the French Chapter of the ILAE and later as Chair of the Scientific Committee of the European Paediatric Neurology Society (EPNS). He is an ILAE Ambassador for Epilepsy and received the EPNS Aicardi Award for excellence in paediatric neurology (2017) and the 2022 European Epilepsy Education Award.
He co-edited and contributed to the latest edition (4th) of "Aicardi's Diseases of the Nervous System in Childhood" (McKeith Press), a premier reference textbook for many.
Dr. Arzimanoglou is Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of the ILAE educational journal Epileptic Disorders - a journal he contributed to creating and served it as Editor-in-Chief for more than 20 years - and Associate Editor of the European Journal of Paediatric Neurology. He has authored/co-authored seven books and published over two hundred peer reviewed articles mainly in the fields of child neurology and childhood epilepsies.
