Research group
Carlos Lerín graduated in Biochemistry in 1997 of the University of Barcelona and obtained his Doctor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology degree in 2002 ofthe University of Barcelona.
Between 2003 and 2007, he completed a postdoctoral stay at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (Baltimore, MS, USA) where he studied, through experimental models, the molecular mechanisms that regulate lipid and glucidic metabolism in mammals. Subsequently, the Joslin Diabetes Center-Harvard Medical School (Boston, MA, USA) deepened, through human studies, the knowledge on the mechanisms involved in the development of insulin resistance, obesity, and risk of type 2 diabetes.
Since 2013 he is a Researcher of the Endocrinology Service of the SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital. Currently, together with Dr. Josep Carles Jiménez Chillarón, he leads the research group in Pediatric Metabolic Diseases · Institut de Recerca Sant Joan de Déu. He is a principal investigator of 2 lines of research:
- Influence of the composition of breast milk on the risk of childhood obesity
- Development of new strategies for the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity.

IRSJD researchers have discovered an intergenerational inheritance mechanism in mouse models of childhood obesity
A study led by Dr. Josep Jiménez-Chillaron, a researcher at the Institut de Recerca Sant Joan de Déu and the University of Barcelona, suggests that hepatic steatosis could be intergenerationally inherited through paternal germ line microRNAs. Hepatic steatosis is a condition that is associated with childhood obesity. The results of this study have been published in the scientific journal Nutrients.
