Lourdes Ibáñez Toda graduated in Medicine from the Autonomous University of Barcelona in 1977 and obtained her Doctor of Medicine degree from the same university in 1981.
Between 1993 and 1994, she completed a stay at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where she studied the mechanisms involved in the pathophysiology of polycystic ovary syndrome. Subsequently, she has developed international collaborations with various European (Belgium, Germany, United Kingdom) and US-based research groups working on the subject, resulting in numerous publications in high-impact factor journals (H-index 63) and invited presentations, as well as a consensus text on the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome in adolescents (2017, revised 2023).
Her trajectory has been recognized with the Research Award (2013), granted by the European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology (ESPE), the National Research Award (2014), granted by the Fundació Catalana per a la Recerca i Innovació(Government of Catalonia), the Visionary Award from the Human Growth Foundation (USA, 2022), and the International Excellence in Endocrinology Award (American Endocrine Society, USA, 2022). Lourdes Ibáñez is also the coordinator of the Paediatric & Adolescent Working Group of the ESPE, of the study group Pequeño para la Edad Gestacional of the Sociedad Española de Endocrinología Pediátrica, and the group leader of CIBERDEM (Carlos III Health Institute, Madrid).
Since 2020, she has been a Professor of Paediatrics at the University of Barcelona (UB); since 2012, she has been the director of the Master's Degree in Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes at the University of Barcelona (UB), and since 2016, the head of clinical research in the endocrinology service. Currently, she coordinates the research area at the IRSJD on "Adaptive Response, Metabolism, and Immunobiology".

Dr. Lourdes Ibañez, from the Institut de Recerca Sant Joan de Déu, coordinates the new European SPIOMET4HEALTH will test the efficacy of this new treatment for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) in adolescent girls and young adult women, in a multi-centric phase II clinical trial.
