The researcher Joan Domènech Abella graduated in Sociology in 2013 from the University of Barcelona and in 2014 received his master's degree in Political Analysis at the same university. In 2019, he defended his doctoral dissertation, entitled “The Impact of Social Conditions on Mental Health: Loneliness and Depression in the Elderly”, at the University of Barcelona.
During his pre-doctoral period, he received a University Teaching Training fellowship from the "Ministry of Culture and Sports", and simultaneously worked in the research group "Epidemiology of mental disorders and aging", at the Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Déu, and to the "Research Group in Economic and Social Ethics and Epistemology of the Social Sciences", of the University of Barcelona.
Between 2014 and 2019 he collaborated on projects such as "Sant Boi Ageing Study", funded by the Sant Boi City Council and the Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Déu, and "Ageing Trajectories of Health - Longitudinal Opportunities and Synergies (ATHLOS) ", funded by the European Commission. In addition, he has published several articles on the social factors of mental health and well-being in international journals and has been a professor at the University of Barcelona.
In 2019, he spent a pre-doctoral stay at the "Vrije Universiteit Brussel", where he collaborated on the project "Detection - Support and Care for Older People: Prevention and Empowerment (D-SCOPE), funded by the Belgian government." The project aims to identify strategies for screening seniors at risk for fragility and to guide them to appropriate support and/or care.
Currently, he is a postdoctoral researcher in the group "Epidemiology of mental disorders and aging", in the San Juan de Déu Health Park, he is a member of the consortium "Center for Biomedical Research in Mental Health Network (CIBERSAM)" and he is an associate professor at the University of Vic.

Loneliness multiplies by five the chances of developing depression
A study published in the Journal of affective disorders and led by Dr. Joan Domènech, researcher at the Institut de Recerca Sant Joan de Déu (IRSJD), determines that the probability that a person living in a situation of loneliness will develop depression is five times greater than one that does not have this kind of feeling.
