Adipose dysfunction and metabolic disorders in HIV-1 patients
Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biomedicine of the Faculty of Biology of the University of Barcelona.
Marta Giralt received a BA (1986) and a PhD (1989) in Biological Sciences from the University of Barcelona. He did a postdoctoral stay at the Dpt Biochemistry, School of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, USA (1990-1991) where he studied the transcriptional regulation of genes in metabolism. He later completed an EMBO fellowship at CEREMOD, CNRS in Meudon-Paris, France (1992) to fine-tune brown adipocyte cell models. Returned to the UB, he focused on the study of the molecular, cellular and endocrine mechanisms involved in the control of adipose tissue plasticity and its functional regulation, with both basic molecular and translational research approaches. She has been coordinator of the Interdepartmental Doctoral Program in Biomedicine UB (2001-2007), Vice-Dean of Research of the Faculty of Biology UB (2008-2012), and now Secretary of the Faculty of Doctors UB and member of the Advisory Board of the Rector of the University of Barcelona (beginning 2018). In terms of scientific management tasks, he has been an Assistant Member of the ANEP Biomedicine Commission of the AEI (State Research Agency, MINECO) from 2015 to 2018.
She is currently the principal co-researcher of the group "Molecular Metabolism and Disease" of the Institute of Biomedicine of the University of Barcelona (IBUB) and of the CIBER "Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition" (CIBEROBN). She directs as main researcher projects consecutively funded by FIS-ISCIII on molecular studies of the etiopathogenesis of metabolic and adipose alterations (lipoatrophy, obesity) associated with HIV-1 virus infection and antiretroviral treatment, in close collaboration with hospitals and clinical research centers.
