Research group
Cristian Launes graduated in Medicine from the University of Barcelona in 2005 and specialized in Pediatrics in 2010 at the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona. In 2009 he began predoctoral training in clinical medicine (Pediatric Infectious Diseases, SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital, University of Barcelona) and biomedical research (Infectious diseases and systemic inflammatory response in pediatrics, Institut de Recerca Sant Joan de Déu, Barcelona), specializing in respiratory viruses. He completed the Master of Research in Clinical Sciences (University of Barcelona). In 2012 he obtained his Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Barcelona with the Extraordinary Doctorate Award for his thesis on the 2009 pandemic influenza virus.
Later, he became a post-doctoral researcher in the pediatric infectious diseases translational research group at the Institut de Recerca Sant Joan de Déu. Currently, he is a researcher in the Pediatric Infectology Research Group at the Institut de Recerca Sant Joan de Déu and a researcher at the CIBER for Epidemiology and Public Health (CIBERESP). He has been principal investigator of several competitive projects (in AES and CIBERESP calls) and has more than 40 publications with an impact factor, of which 60% occupies some position of principal or senior authorship, mainly focused on the impact of viral respiratory diseases on children's health.
Since 2011, he has been an adjunct pediatrician at Hospital Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona. The healthcare areas of special interest, and which have developed the most during this time, are the diagnosis and treatment of children with infectious diseases and the global treatment of children and adolescents after highly complex procedures and surgeries.
He has been teaching and tutoring residents, accredited by the Department of Health, since 2014. MIR Teaching Coordinator of Paediatrics since December 2019. Associate Professor of Paediatrics at the University of Barcelona (Campus Hospital Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona). Lecturer in courses in the areas of pediatric hospital care, pediatric infectious diseases, and management of newborns and critical children.

New insights into COVID-19 protection in children have revealed the presence of sACE2 in the saliva
The presence of the soluble angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (sACE2) in saliva could have implications for COVID-19 infection, prevention and control, according to researchers from the Institut de Recerca Sant Joan de Déu and the University of Catalunya. This study has been published in Scientific Reports.

Relationship of environmental exposure to nitrogen oxide with the severity of rhinovirus infection
Researchers at Institut de Recerca Sant Joan de Déu (IRSJD) · SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital have found that exposure to higher concentrations of atmospheric nitrogen oxide in childhood is associated with greater severity of rhinovirus infection and a higher number of admissions to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit.

From the common cold virus to severe respiratory illness in children
Dr Cristian Launes and Dr Carmen Múñoz (IRSJD researchers) with Dr Daniel Penela-Sánchez and Dr Georgina Armero started a project in 2017 to understand the severity of rhinovirus and enterovirus infection in children.
